Everton may have been splashing the cash over the last few years to try and get them back to their former glory days and competing for a place in European competition, however their recent business has shown that they can be a little smarter with their money.
The Toffees have made some rather strange and telling decisions at moments in previous transfer windows as it seemed the newfound money that they had at the time was more of a problem than a blessing as they did not quite know what to do with it. Indeed, there has been some mixed reaction to that figure over the years, as the Iceland international has split opinions during his time at the club. The playmaker has had a few good years and has been reliable in the past, however recent campaigns have perhaps seen him lose his ability a little.
Richarlison – £35.28m
In today’s market and with how things have gone for Richarlison since swapping Hertfordshire for Merseyside, £35.28m looks to have been a bargain price for his switch. Having swapped Watford for Everton – something Abdoulaye Doucoure has since done as well – the Brazilian has been a hit at Goodison Park and has become one of their most important players with his contributions in the final third. He has since become the man to have finally been able to replace the void that Romelu Lukaku’s departure left.
Romelu Lukaku – £31.82m
Speaking of Lukaku, he sits third in this list of most expensive Everton signings, but again, he has arguably worth every penny. Considering Manchester United shelled out almost more than double to sign him from the Toffees, the Belgian arguably made his name in the Premier League whilst at the Goodison Park outfit and showed everyone that he had the ability to play in the league effectively after a torrid time at Chelsea. Alex Iwobi – £27.36m
Now, this is a deal that stinks of desperation. Everton signed Alex Iwobi from Arsenal in a mad dash on deadline day in last summer’s window in a deal that appeared to come out of nowhere. The Colombia international defender had a solid 2018 FIFA World Cup and looked likely to fulfil the potential he had to offer. However, he does appear to have struggled whilst at the Toffees – with injuries playing a huge role – but perhaps he just needs a manager like Ancelotti to help him get back on his way and show the Premier League that he can be a top defender.
